After taking a break from college to figure out his interests, John R. Kunath ’26 found his passion in geoscience. Now, as a geoscience major with a double minor in climate science and physics, John is excited for the future. His career goal is to search for planets similar to Earth that can host life. “By understanding how the Earth and other planets work, I want to better our systems here on Earth and understand different planetary systems in the universe.”
To reach his goal, John is currently conducting research with the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, gaining experience in his field by creating maps, understanding population demographics, and developing outreach plans. His research is giving him the tools and experience to be a geoscientist after Carthage.

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the beautiful location and the smaller class sizes.”
Faculty mentors
“In my experience, the professors here at Carthage truly care about the growth of their students. Studying under professors who are passionate about what they do is infectious. When I am struggling, I know I can talk with my professors, and they will be there to help and guide me in the right direction.”
Favorite class
“Biogeography with Professor Joy Mast was an amazing experience. Not just because of the multiple field trips to museums and zoos, but also because of Prof. Mast herself. She is passionate about what she teaches, and the content she provided made the class fun and exciting every week.”
Toughest class
“The toughest course I’ve taken is Creation and Apocalypse: Explorations Between Religion and Science with Professor Julius Crump. Not only was this the toughest class for me, but it was also the most rewarding. Writing is not my strong suit by any means, especially when given broad, open-ended prompts. This class forced me to think critically about two subjects I have always pondered, religion and science, and write about them in ways I could never express before.”
Golden opportunities
“I had the chance to take a J-Term study tour to Europe. We traveled to Vienna, Austria, and Budapest/Kecskemét, Hungary. The trip was an amazing experience in which we got to view the history and culture of such beautiful places.”
Favorite spot on campus
“The David A. Straz Jr. Center is my favorite spot. On the second floor overlooking the lake, there is a small nook with some comfortable chairs where I can zone in and do my work.”
